Starkville, MS
Abstract
In this interview Y.W. recounts her time experiencing homelessness and housing insecurity. A local to West Point, MS, Y.W. had a self-described difficult childhood. With a mother who faced severe mental health issues, she and her siblings were raised by her father and other female figures in her life. In her 20s, Y. W. found herself homeless on the streets of West Point and gave up custody of her kids to their grandfather. Currently, Y.W. lives in a two-bedroom apartment that she found with the help of a local non-profit and wants to start working on regaining custody of her kids.
Y.W. enjoys her current residence that she shares with a roommate for the privacy and security it provides. Y.W. speaks about her strong passion for helping those who she knows are homeless. She does this by providing them with any extra food she might have in her pantry, cooking meals, and referring them to a local non-profit, Starkville Strong. Her dream is to have a home with enough rooms for people who are struggling to get back on their feet and to provide a "meals on wheels" service to those who are homeless or in need.
