Abstract

S.C. was born in Chicago and raised in Columbus, Mississippi and has lived in Columbus for most of her life. In her early years, she lived with her mother, father, and her four other siblings. S.C. recalls her childhood home being a dilapidated dwelling. The family lived on a ranch, but the house was in very poor condition. When her mother had an accident and fell through the floorboards of their old home, they decided to buy a new house. S.C. lived in this newer house during her later teenage years. She expresses that the new house was like a mansion compared to the last, and it established her expectations for housing later in life.

S.C. currently stays at a hotel because the landlord of a rental home abruptly canceled their arrangement.

S.C. suffers from multiple personality disorders as well as chronic depression, which has affected her housing situation. Despite her condition, she successfully accomplishes her goals such as attaining a college degree. Never the less, she still experiences stigma due to her mental health conditions.

S.C. claims that her condition of being homeless is not due to her mental disorder but rather due to simply being "poor". Within the last year, she was forcefully evicted out of her apartment by her landlord, who also took all her possessions. Although S.C. is currently in the process of suing that landlord, money could never replace the countless valuables she lost that day.
